About Bamboology

We design and build bamboo structures for festivals, exhibitions, and public spaces worldwide. From concept sketches to standing installations, we handle everything, combining architectural training with traditional craft to create structures that last.

Our founder, Joseph Williams, grew up in East Sussex and trained as an architect. In 2014 during a visit to Portugal's Boom Festival, he witnessed Gerard Minikawa's 50-meter bamboo dance temple and was inspired to create his own structures that were temporary, nomadic, and built entirely from natural materials. After training with Gerard's team in California, Joseph returned home to launch Bamboology.

DESIGN TO BUILD

We handle the entire journey, from concept sketches to standing structures. Working with structural engineers when needed, we ensure every project is both ambitious and buildable.

Whether it's planning submissions for permanent installations or engineering a festival temple to withstand 50mph winds, we bring architectural rigor to natural materials.

SUSTAINABLE CRAFT

Influenced by the UK's Arts and Crafts movement, we celebrate the craftsman's contribution to our built environment.

Using responsibly sourced bamboo, natural hemp rope, and traditional lashing techniques, we build structures that are lightweight, strong, and leave minimal environmental impact. No heavy machinery, just skilled hands and smart design.

WHY BAMBOO?

Bamboo is remarkably strong, lightweight, and potentially carbon neutral when responsibly sourced.

Combined with innovative rigging and stretch fabrics, it allows us to build structures that would be impossible with traditional materials. From 8-meter temples to intimate gathering spaces that can be transported, assembled on-site, and removed when the event ends, leaving the site as we found it.
